Dave's Gig Guide
SkinMechanix, Brudenell Social Club, Leeds, 2nd December 2005.
This was a support slot for Air Sculpture and, no disrespect to my friends John, Adrian and Pete, but this is one gig I should have politely refused. The weather was seriously crap, we had trouble with a flat tyre and we arrived late but then the whole event was running late when we got there so... bad omens all rounds.
Then we found that we couldn't get the boot of the car open to get our gear out because the lock had jammed. I had a new disc to release, Fallen Angel, though hardly anybody seemed interested. That was a major pisser.
I played pretty much the same set as I'd performed the previous February, with some notable changes. There was less emphasis on beats and more on ambience and mood. Top of the set was "Fallen Angel", the title track to the new CD. I improvised over the top of the original backing, adding drums and sequences from my ZEIT rack, which was making it's debut live performance. I threw in "The Journey Home" again but had to mime most of the piece because I'd accidentally deleted the sequences a few months before.
However, everything was running horrendously late and Air Sculpture were keen to get cracking so I agreed to drop the last track, America.
The gig wasn't very enjoyable, frankly. The audience were there to see Air Sculpture and interest in my kind of stuff was minimal. I was convinced that this would be my last gig for a long, long time.
